The Red Pillow
The most popular sleeping venue in the four-cat house was a red pillow by the fireplace. Most of the time it was occupied by the twin tuxedo cats, Marco and Milo, who had lived at the home the longest. When Marco and Milo were not on the red pillow, Missy, the shy tortoiseshell, napped there. The red pillow was rarely unoccupied and Chester never had a chance to try it.
One winter day, Missy caught a little brown mouse which brought a lot of excitement to the house. It had been years since Marco and Milo encountered a mouse so they were especially delighted. The mouse was still alive and Missy, Marco, and Milo chased it around the house as if they were kittens again. Chester wanted to play with the mouse too, but he knew it would be his only chance to sleep on the red pillow. He was not going to miss the opportunity.
He skipped to the pillow unnoticed by the other cats. When he put his paw onto the velvety cushion, he knew he had made the right choice. The pillow was the most luxurious pillow he had ever experienced. Chester kneaded the red pillow a few times before settling in for a nap in his favorite position: two paws cushioning his head like a pillow. He stayed there all night while Missy, Marco, and Milo terrorized the little brown mouse from room to room.
